Celtics trade addition -NBA Finals Opener
From the very start of Game 1 of the NBA Finals, the atmosphere at TD Garden was electric. The crowd buzzed with excitement during the pregame introductions, showing their animosity towards Kyrie Irving while passionately cheering for their Celtics.
For many Celtics players, including new additions, this was their first encounter with Boston fans during such a critical stage. Jrue Holiday, who recently joined the team, expressed his admiration for the home crowd’s fervor, which played a significant role in their 107-89 victory over the Mavericks in Game 1.
“What I expected: they brought the energy,” Holiday remarked. “They were live and a great sixth man. But coming out on the court in a Finals game in Boston, there’s nothing like it.”
The Celtics dominated throughout the opening game. Despite an early lead by the Mavericks, the Celtics surged ahead to build a commanding 29-point lead by the second quarter. Although the Mavericks managed to cut the deficit to eight points in the third quarter, the Celtics responded decisively with a 14-0 run.
Securing a win in Game 1 at home was crucial for the Celtics. However, they have struggled in Game 2s during these playoffs, losing both to the Heat and the Cavaliers. Two years ago, they also won Game 1 against the Warriors but ultimately lost the series in six games.
An added layer to Thursday’s game was the focus on former Celtics guard Kyrie Irving. While the animosity from Celtics fans wasn’t as intense as during previous playoffs, there were still notable jeers directed at Irving. The atmosphere, though less hostile than in 2022 when Irving played for the Nets, was charged. Celtics fans are expected to bring the same intensity for Game 2 of the Finals, scheduled for Sunday at 8 p.m. at the Garden.
“I don’t really notice, if you want me to be completely honest,” Holiday commented. “I feel like I’m so locked in with what I have to do. I think whatever they’re saying to Kai, that’s kind of between them. I’ma leave that between them. I’m going out there to do what I can on the court, and that’s how it is.”
Holiday’s focus underscores the Celtics’ determination to maintain their advantage and push forward in the series. With the home crowd’s unwavering support, the Celtics are poised to continue their strong performance in the NBA Finals.
